Uluwatu

Clifftop views, world-class surf breaks and the Kecak fire dance at sunset — Bali's quieter, more dramatic south-coast tip.

Updated August 2026

Uluwatu occupies the Bukit Peninsula, the limestone plateau that forms Bali's southern tip. It's spread further out than Seminyak or Canggu, with clifftop warungs and villas rather than a single walkable strip, and it draws a different crowd: serious surfers chasing reef breaks, and travellers after a quieter, more scenic base than the busier south-coast towns.

Who Uluwatu suits

Best for surf, dramatic scenery and a quieter pace with quality-luxury stays — less convenient if you don't have your own transport, since the villas and beaches are spread along the clifftop rather than clustered.

Cliff-cove beaches

Padang Padang, Bingin and Suluban are reached by steps carved into the cliff face — smaller and quieter than the wide south-coast beaches.

Getting around

Plan for distance

Uluwatu is roughly 40–60 minutes from the airport and about 2–2.5 hours from Ubud by car. A scooter or private driver is close to essential — the beaches, temple and villas are spread across the peninsula rather than walkable from one base.
