What a real day costs at three different travel styles, plus exchange, tipping and cash vs. card basics.
Updated August 2026 — prices are indicative and vary by season and location.
Three budget levels
Backpacker
Homestay room, warung meals, scooter rental, local sights.
USD 25–35 / dayMid-range
Private villa room, mix of warungs and café/restaurant meals, occasional Grab and driver day.
USD 60–100 / dayComfort
Resort or private-pool villa, restaurant dining, private driver, spa and paid activities.
USD 150–300+ / dayWhat things actually cost
| Item | IDR | USD |
|---|---|---|
| Warung meal (local restaurant) | 25,000–45,000 | 1.60–3 |
| Café meal (tourist-oriented) | 60,000–120,000 | 4–8 |
| Large bottled water | 6,000–10,000 | 0.40–0.65 |
| Bintang beer (large) | 35,000–50,000 | 2.30–3.30 |
| Coffee (local kopi) | 10,000–20,000 | 0.65–1.30 |
| 1-hour massage | 100,000–180,000 | 6.50–12 |
| Scooter rental (per day) | 60,000–90,000 | 4–6 |
Cash, cards & tipping
Cash (IDR) is still expected at warungs, markets, temples and scooter rentals. Cards are widely accepted at hotels, resorts and larger restaurants. Withdraw from bank-branded ATMs (BCA, Mandiri) where possible — standalone tourist-area ATMs often carry high fees.
Tipping isn't obligatory but is appreciated: round up taxi/Grab fares, leave IDR 10,000–20,000 for a massage therapist, and 5–10% at restaurants without a service charge already added.
A real week, mid-range style
Here's what a 7-day mid-range trip for one person actually adds up to, based on the per-item prices above.
| Category | Daily | 7 days |
|---|---|---|
| Private villa room (split 2 ways) | USD 30 | USD 210 |
| Food (2 warung meals + 1 café meal) | USD 10 | USD 70 |
| Scooter rental | USD 5 | USD 35 |
| Activities & entry fees | USD 8 | USD 56 |
| Drinks, coffee, snacks | USD 6 | USD 42 |
| One massage + misc. | USD 7 | USD 49 |
| Total | ~USD 66 | ~USD 462 |
That excludes flights, the e-VOA fee, and travel insurance — add those separately when budgeting a full trip. A private driver day (~USD 45–58) or an overnight Nusa Penida side trip will push a given week higher.
Where to save, where it's worth spending
Worth spending on
A private driver for temple-heavy or long-distance days (traffic makes DIY driving slow and tiring), travel insurance that actually covers scooter accidents, and one or two proper resort or villa nights to break up a longer trip.
Easy to cut without losing much
Skip the tourist-strip cafés for warung meals (a third of the price for similar quality), rent a scooter instead of relying on Grab for a multi-day stay, and book activities directly rather than through a hotel concierge, which often marks up 20–30%.
